The Vanguard Group must focus on growth by employing several critical strategies or risk incurring significant financial damage. Currently, about 80% to 90% of Vanguard’s total clientele also hold funds with competitors (see Figure 1 in Appendix). Furthermore, often unseen net redemption rates in the industry pose a distressing risk to the company as more and more clients cash out of their portfolios. In order to positively affect its financial standing, Vanguard must be vigilant in both retaining the qualities that created its brand equity as well as exploring options that allow for the expansion of its customer base. Firstly, Vanguard must remain the low expense, high quality provider of financial instruments. The company must continue to segment the market based on customer investment horizon and target those investors who wish to hold for the long-term.
