After the civil war, when emancipation and the Thirteenth Amendment provided freedom for the formers slaves, the United States was undergoing the phase of reconstruction under the president Abraham Lincoln. However, Lincoln was soon assassinated and the Vice President Andrew Johnson took charge of the Reconstruction movement. As Andrew Johnson tried to carry on his own interpretation of Abraham Lincoln’s reconstruction plan, he unintentionally forged a stronger bond between the radical Republicans and the moderate Republicans.
The conflict between Andrew Johnson and the radical Republicans began with the Black Code. In 1865, when Southern states legalized Black Codes, a series of laws to limit the civil rights of African American, Andrew Johnson Approved it.
