BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX’S INFLUENCE ON REFORMERS’ SPIRITUALITY FOR THE REFORMATION: ON REFORMATION AND PRESERVATION
Introduction
As we well know, in the end of the Middle Ages, Luther and Calvin were reformers who wanted to reform the Roman Catholic Church, which was severely corrupted. It is then important for us to know from whom they could learn the idea for a reformation. In doing this, we can learn how to reform our current churches, which has many problems. There are some spiritual leaders who affected Luther and Calvin. This research will deal primarily with Bernard’s spirituality, and his influence on the two reformers.
The purpose of this study is to examine the essential spirituality of Bernard, and his influence on Luther and Calvin for reformation. In doing this, this research will find parts of his spirituality that both of the reformers inherited and parts they neglected in the context of church history. After that, I will apply the results to recent churches. This study will, at first, refer to primary sources of Bernard, Luther, and Calvin. However, I will also consult secondary works to find some reviews and opinions of the reformers.
This research will mainly deal with the spirituality of Bernard that is related to Luther and Calvin. Specifically, it will study parts of Bernard’s spirituality which the two reformers used or neglected for reformation. I will not deal with theological matters in detail, because this paper is written for in the context of church history.
Bernard’s spiritual background
At first, it is necessary for me to examine Bernard’s spiritual background before studying his spirituality. In doing this, we can understand why and how it was formed.
Bernard was born near Citeaux in a noble family in 1090. His parents were faithful Christians. So, he could inherit a faith from his parents. His mother especially played an important role in correcting his mind when he sought to study for worldly desires. Although his father objected to his will for being a monk, he decided to go to Citeaux to seek a monastic life. Stephen, who was an abbot of the monastery, found that Bernard had a gift which God gave and appointed to him to be a founder and abbot of Clairvaux when he was 25 years old.
Here he came to be familiar with Latin and Greek patristic traditions, due to his friends’ influence. In addition, another basis of his spirituality and theology was his abundant knowledge of the Bible. He learned truth through meditation of the scripture. For him, this kind of knowledge was more than mere intelligence.
