In the work of many twentieth-century English dramatists it is possible to see not only the products of the individual writer's ideas and experience, but also several general tendencies. 20 세기 영국 극작가의 작품을 살펴보면 작가 개인의 생각과 경험의 산물을 볼 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 여러 가지 일반적인 성향까지 볼 수 있다. This does not mean that the writers are members of a group, but that they share enough beliefs and concerns for their work to have several important things in common. 이 말은 곧 극작가들이 어떤 같은 그룹에 속해 있다는 것을 의미하는 것이 아니라 작품에 대한 관심사와 신념을 공유하고 있기 때문에 여러 가지 중요한 공통점을 가진다는 것을 의미한다.

One of these loose groupings relates to the attempt to show on stage some parts of the daily lives of ordinary people in a realistic way that often contains social and political criticism. 그렇게 (임의적으로) 구성된 그룹 중 한 그룹이 보통 사람들의 일상 생활의 일부분을 사실적인 방식으로 무대 위에서 보여주려는 시도를 하게 되는데, 그런 사실적인 방식은 종종 사회적 비판과 정치적 비판을 담고 있다.
