is study was reconstructed from questions of a questionnaire in the precedent paper by Kang Yoon-kyung and Son In-sook. The self-administered questionnaire was conducted for the measurement of lookism in adolescents in the Gyeonggi region; was classified into 8 items, 'perception of appearance,' 'interest in appearance,' 'attitude toward appearance ,' 'grooming behavior,' 'internalization of sociocultural values toward appearance,' 'appearance satisfaction,' 'body esteem,' and 'involvement in lookism'; and was statistically processed, using the SPSS program. Relationship between lookism and the respondents' involvement in lookism in terms of the items, and the effects of lookism on their involvement in lookism were examined; and implications were deduced therefrom.
As for the human-related scope of the statistical empirical study, questionnaires were distributed to and collected from 192 middle-school students, 110 academic high-school students, and 99 vocational high-school students in the area of Gyeonggi Province.
The results of this study indicate that the adolescents showed a great interest in appearance, with 47.6 and that the higher their interest in appearance, the higher their involvement in lookism. Also, as for the present conditions of the adolescents' lookism, it was found that their dissatisfaction with weight was high, with 46.4 and that the adolescents' involvement in lookism is too high, with teenagers' plastic surgeries accounting for about 10% of the overall plastic surgeries.
Adolescence is a preparatory stage for a child's growth into an independent adult, and is a period when a variety of changes and development occur including mental, emotional, intellectual, and social maturity as well as physical and physiological growth. And so adolescents come to think much about their appearance, and it may be said that appearance in adolescence when physical development occurs suddenly is significant in their growth and development. Excessive involvement in lookism, however, has become mental and physical problems for adolescents whose sound self-consciousness about beauty is yet to form.
The question of which values adolescents have is further linked to the future of society and a country as well as is a question associated with the adolescents' own growth and development. As a result of this study on adolescents' lookism, here are some suggestions as follows:
First, strict regulations are required against sensational advertisements or broadcasts aimed to expand profits. Secondly, a critical viewpoint should be cultivated against the belief, which is strengthened by mass media and the Internet, that appearance is important. Thirdly, it will be ultimately the way of protecting adolescents' subjecthood from the excessive influence of lookism to encourage experience and activities which help adolescents to think seriously about themselves and concentrate on exploring their identity so that they establish their positive self-identity.
