Shakespearean Aesthetics in Characterization
Abstract Young-Joo, Choi
The discovery of Shakespearean aesthetics was made by Jacobean writers when they mentioned his imagination with scoff as well as derision. His spontaneous overflowing imagination was regarded as the lack of learning and gravity, besides as the whole aspect of his unfamiliar writing style.
The romantic writers developed their imagination theory with the examples of Shakespeare's poetics and his characterization. For them Shakespearean characters are the individuals in their own world through writer's imagination. Bradley touched the summit in this view.
These days critical approach take another turn for Shakespearean characters. New historicists face ideological conflicts of its age through the Shakespearean individuals and his dramatic world. Shakespearean characters are not individuals in the dramatic reality but they reflect the dominating discourse of the society. In this, Shakespearean characters are part of historical context without their subjectivity.
The merit to understand Shakespearean characters as individuals is it enables us to communicate with them beyond the ages. In regarding the plot which develops by the words and actions, the exploitation of Shakespearean aesthetics in characterization should be fathomed to the depth.
