[Abstract]
The Ambition of Faustus and the Tragic Significance from Subversion
Chungyeol Park
In the age of Renaissance, what is important is not God but Man. The characteristic of the Renaissance age is not obedience to God but, instead, the display of man's potential energy and ambition; this is the Renaissance spirit. Boundless in its aspirations, the Renaissance spirit is the theme of all the Marlorian plays. Faustus is a symbol of the Renaissance spirit. Marlowe depicts this Faustian spirit in his plays and his main characters show their ambition. Although they are mortal and have human limitations, they want to transcend these limitations and express their free will. Faustus strives for omniscience. He is an overreacher, the epitome of Renaissance aspiration.
The important point in Doctor Faustus is not whether Faustus leads a pleasant or comfortable life but whether he lives according to his own principles with human dignity. He has special knowledge in many fields but his hunger for knowledge doesn't end with knowledge of the world. He thinks that if he gains these kinds of knowledge, he could dominate the world. To have these kinds of knowledge, he could sacrifice his life. He has all the divine discontent, the unwearied and unsatisfied striving after knowledge. He tries to abjure God in the hope of becoming something more than a man.
Although Faustus doesn't overcome the limitation of being human and dies, Marlowe thinks it is significant that humans should try to conquer all difficulties. In doing this we can feel the grandeur and greatness of Man. That is the spirit of Renaissance and the message of Marlowe. Therefore the death of Faustus is not meaningless because he achieves his wishes to be omnipotent.
We see the tragic significance from the death or downfall of the tragic hero, Faustus, and his magnitude revealed in his struggle against his fate or circumstances which are beyond his control. Faustus struggles to recover his rightful place and evaluate himself justly, showing his indestructible will to achieve his humanity. His death or downfall becomes his victory rather than his defeat.
