“A Rose for Emily” and “Barn Burning,” written by William Faulkner, asserts that suffering in human life is not only an issue to socially underprivileged people but also a serious concern to privileged people. Emily, the protagonist of “A Rose for Emily,” is a woman who lives with her father, but she does not have freedom at all because her father regards her as one of his properties. One day, her father dies, and she meets a man whose name is Homer Baron, but unfortunately she chooses to kill Homer. She goes to a druggist, buys arsenic, and kills Homer because he is the first and the last rose for Emily: Homer is her first lover when Emily meets him, and he becomes her last lover when she kills him. Although she knows she will be with her lover’s breathless body, she has to kill Homer to be with him forever. At the end of the story, people in the town are shocked by finding Homer’s skeleton and Emily’s hair which implies Emily has been with Homer’s dead body for several decades. In “Barn Burning,” Colonel Sartoris Snopes is a protagonist, but I consider Sartoris’ father as another protagonist whose name is Abner Snopes. Sartoris, who is usually called Sarty in the story, thinks to represent his father’s thought instead. For instance, when the justice at the first trial questions Sarty, Sarty regards the justice as an opponent and shouts “‘Enemy! Enemy!’ in his mind” (Faulkner 483). Sarty’s silent reaction to the people at the first trial is added by Faulkner to explain how Abner feels for the trial and the justice. Meanwhile, Faulkner delivers Abner’s unique characteristics such as quietness, straightforwardness, and aggressiveness to the readers.
