결 론

본문내용

at he can find this ambivalence between
depravity and virginity of her sex. The names reflects contradictory emotions of
her brothers, which are love an hate.
Faced with the case, the reader decide to gather her own voices, which is
suppressed among contrasting images of virgin and whore. It is interesting to
hear her voice. Through her voice, we can find her beauty and anguish.
Whereas her beauty has a tint of challenge againt prejudice and falsehood, her
anguish comes from sharp selfconsciousness of sexual desire and its morality.
She is on the border between custom and a radical departure from it. Such an
anguish and beauty derives sympathy form the reader and makes him face up to
reality of a man and his society.
It is ingenious how the writer draws the character, Caddy. In the former
narrations, he shows her beauty and self consciousness through her anguish.
However, in the last narration, Appendix, he does her beautiful depravity of
evasion and abandonement through her happiness. By one way, he aims an
arrow of onticism at the society which surrounds her. (Such a beauty and
evasion prove her promiscuity and lack of endurance.) By the other, way he
lightens the intensity of straight condemnation by leaving her own sexual
disposition and a defect of her personality.
It is for the purpose of loading the weight of history with Caddy's virginity
that the writer raised the virgin space as a formation and foundation of a family.
He does this work with a view to showing an undurable lightness of the present.
Present corrupt picture of Caddy contains the obssessive self consciousness of
virginity in the past among the Southerners. While the writer suggests the point
of view of the Southerners through the life of a woman, he expands the
nightmare of a sex into a social symbol. Connecting the former chapters in the
stream of a primitive, aristocratic, commercial culture, he shows force and element
of a social situation by contrasting remote past with recent present in the
Appendix.
In the stream and contrast, the writer condeneses Caddy's own conflict, the
conflict with her neighbor and the environment. Faulkner, through Caddy, or her
sexuality, speaks all th true story of man and defence. Like Joyce, Faulkner as a
part of himself, has a contradictory and obscure emotion of love and hate for the
South. 'This contradictory emotion' gives birth to the contradictory desire of
catching and avoiding the object.
If Faulkner's love for the South bears the desire of catching the lost
dimension of South, it can be said that this creates complex and repetitive form
of narration. Also, his hate, which derives from his consciousness of a limit
and defect in South tradition and morality, makes 'parody for his south and
himself.' Caddys Obscurity results from his contradictory emotion, his parody.
Key words : opened space, obscurity, ambivalence. Caddy's voice,
Contradictory emotion of the writer, parody for South and himself.
