본문내용

Introduction
I currently work in a program that offers leisure and recreational opportunities for young adults with disabilities. Approximately one third of the clients that access this program have been diagnosed with Autism. Due to my lack of knowledge in this area, I often find my interactions with these clients challenging and unsuccessful. It is of extreme importance to me, that all clients receive a beneficial and satisfying experience from the program. Therefore , it is the purpose of this assessment to increase my knowledge, so I can apply it to developing strategies that I can use in creating positive experiences for clients with Autism.
Objective 1 – Understand the general characteristics displayed by people with Autism, with emphasis on the spectrum of Autism.
Autism is a disability resulting from a neurological disorder of the brain. The
criteria for Autism is still being debated, but most agree that an individual will
display autistic characteristics by thirty six months of age. However, most diagnosis’s are based on the three areas which are listed in the below diagram.

Impaired Social Interaction
Repetitive Behavior Impaired Communication
& Restricted Interests

Impairment of Social Interaction
In the most serve form this may be displayed as aloofness or indifference. The Autistic person may approach people to obtain simple needs, but ignore that person once the need has been fulfilled. In a more active Autistic individual, interaction may be initiated, but the interaction is spontaneous and repetitive.
