My first outcome that I wanted to look at was getting a better understanding of what exactly Autism was. By doing this I would look at what autism is, how it affects someone and what preventative measures or cures are available.
Autism is generally grouped together with Asperger’s Syndrome under the umbrella term of “Autism Spectrum Disorders”. The two are developmental disabilities that remain with the sufferer for life. They affect the ways in which a person participates in general social interaction, communication with others and generally lead to behavioral problems mostly associated with the repetitive nature of their activities and their restricted interests. These problems generally cause children with autism to be excluded from a lot of group activities. This is especially the case when it comes to leisure activities as their own restricted interests and the communication barriers make it harder for them to be included in a lot of group activities.
The specific cause of autism is not yet known, however it is thought that genetic factors are the main contributor to the onset of autism. Autism is generally with a child from birth but can be developed as late as 3 years of age. Autism generally affects four times as many males as females and is not restricted to certain races, social class or nationality. Some symptoms associated with Autism are a difficulty in reading body language, facial expressions and general gestures; a difficulty interacting with peers, will display difficulties with social communication. While someone that has autism may sometimes display what is considered “normal” behaviour patterns it will be only occasionally that this happens.
