The Effects of the Portfolio media type on Students'; Academic Achievement and Attitude Towards a Vocational High School Programming Class

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the Portfolio media type on Students'; Academic Achievement and Attitude Towards a Programming Class in a Vocational High School setting. The Portfolio is a typical performance assessment, which has been used in many subjects. It is an effective method to assess the student’s results and process their performances systematically. However, there exists a problem which has been raised steadily. It takes a long time for students to make a proper portfolio. In addition to this, it is hard to keep and manage these portfolios. These aforementioned problems can be solved by having the students create their portfolios in the form of a digitalized e-portfolio. For this reason, this study will attempt to display the viability and practicality of e-portfolios as a replacement for the traditional method.
For this research, fifty-eight 2nd grade high school students, who major in Multimedia, were selected from P Vocational High school located in Busan. They were divided into the experimental group and the control group, each composed of 29 students. One teacher was responsible for teaching both classes, and the lesson content was the same. The experimental group was taught using e-portfolios during their learning and the control group was taught using printed portfolios. Every student in both groups was assessed by academic achievement and changes in their learning attitudes after the experiment.
The results are as follows. First, there exists a sharp difference between the experimental group taught by e-portfolio and the control group taught by printed portfolio. This is because e-portfolios have little risk to be lost and are easier to maintain than printed version. Second, e-portfolios have a meaningful influence on students' academic achievement. Third, e-portfolios had influenced an improvement in students' learning attitudes.
In short, e-portfolios have no time or physical restraints and they are easy to keep for a long term. It makes it possible for students to be motivated by actively participating in creating their own portfolios and having responsibility and satisfaction for their works. Therefore, e-portfolios can be the most suitable teaching-learning medium for the students in an information-oriented society.
