Abstract
Christian Apologetic Methods in a Postmodern Era

The purpose of this study is to seek an alternative apologetic method in a postmodern era. I develop two major themes for the study. The first is developed by answering the question: What is postmodernism and what is its impact on our society and culture? Second, the study examines and evaluates several apologetic methods and seeks the best form of response to the threats posed by postmodernism.
Chapter 1 deals with the purpose, content and method of the present study. In chapter 2, I consider the background, definition and characteristics of postmodernism. This chapter shows that postmodernism is inextricably linked with modernism and is characterized by very complex and diverse phenomena.
Then in chapter 3, I examine the influence of postmodernism on our culture, thought, politics and society, and Christianity. I argue that postmodernism exercises a far-reaching influence on all fields of academia and society today. Especially, I am interested in its effects on Christianity. Several scholars take a positive view of its effects on our churches, while many theologians believe that its influence on Christianity is largely negative. I generally agree with the latter opinion. As such, I am of the opinion that Christians should explore effective means of responding to these challenges.
Therefore, one of the purposes of this study is to deal with these challenges in terms of Christian apologetics. So, I examine the outline and history of a wide range of apologetic methods employed by the churches in chapter 4. Chapter 5 provides a detailed evaluation of these apologetic methods. Both chapters reveal that each one had its own merits and demerits in a postmodern period. Therefore, I present Alister McGrath\'s method as a viable alternative. I examine here his method as delineated in his apologetic works. Moreover, I explore the effectiveness of his method by studying the views of other apologists. As a result, I find that they generally supported his method. In conclusion, it could justifiably be seen that McGrath\'s apologetic method is very effective in our age.
However, we should also develop more effective apologetics in order to cope with the challenges of diverse powers such as postmodernism, science, atheism, etc. In addition, I am certain that we need to foster specialists who can effectively deal with these potent threats.
