본문내용
been consistently the object of argument through the centuries. The four main interpretations follow.
First, "all Israel" means both Jewish and those who are selected and saved among the Gentiles. This is with the eschatological prospect, supported by Calvin and Dr. H. C. Kee.
Second, "all Israel" means all of the selected people in Israel. This is the concept that "all Israel" is accepted literally. It was supported by Bengel.
Third, "all Israel" means Israel as the entire nation including individuals. This was supported by Thomas Aquinas.
Fourth, "all Israel" means Israel as the entire nation; but, in this case, there is no need to include individuals necessarily. This is supported by many scholars, including C. E. B. Cranfield.
Considering the background of the Old Testament era, the process of changes of its meaning, and the context of Romans 9-11, this term does not literally mean Israel and the present writer agrees with the first viewpoint which is with the eschatological prospect, accepted as the extended concept including the Gentiles.
c) The Eschatological Interpretation of "All Israel" and Drawing the Conclusion
In the New Testament, "all Israel" hardly means the patriarchal concept of Israel. In the New Testament, Israel is already located on the extended line, and is the concept including other people beyond national members of chosen Israel. The extension in this meaning can be acceptable on the eschatological conception which will be completed in the future. Accordingly, the examples of "all Israel" in Romans 11 : 26 used by Paul are not confined to any limited range or object, and can be concluded as "New Israel," the whole people of the kingdom of God in terms of spirit.
III. Conclusion
The conclusive judgments can be summarized with three or four items as following ;
1) Romans 9-11 is the most important part in the text which holds its position in the whole Epistle, keeping authenticity and unity.
2) The role of Romans 9-11 is to connect smoothly the whole Epistle between chapters 1-8 and 12-16. And they are the paragraphs which stress the absoluteness of faith to obtain salvation.
3) These paragraphs appeal to unite Jews and Gentiles in the absolute view of salvation of "Justification by faith" and to build up the relationship of companions in faith.
4) "All Israel" of Romans 11 : 26 is the intensive example of the upper intents of Paul and is not limited or confined to a certain range. They show broader meaning of "New Israel" and can be concluded as the expectation for the real harmony of the Christian world in the eschatological prospect.
