Technical Efficiency and Returns to Scale of Korean Banks : Using Non-Parametric Method

This paper examines the returns to scale of Korean banks by employing DEA model. We also obtain the technical efficiency and the optimal inputs of banks. The decline in technical efficiency need not imply a decline in average bank productivity. An outward shift in efficient production frontier by a bank could decline in bank efficiency. Further research is necessary to investigate why the technical efficiency declines. The results of this study indicate that most of the inefficient banks are in increasing returns to scale. It is suggested that the banks in increasing returns to scale should not reduce the input or the input less in order to become efficient banks.
