음 + y]로 된 말은 y를 i로 고쳐 -er, -est를 붙인다.

　 어미가 「모음 + y」인 경우는 -er, -est를 그대로 붙임. (gay - gayer - gayest)
④ 대다수의 2음절어와 3음절어 이상의 긴 형용사는 more, most를 붙인다.

　 어미가 -ful, -able, -less, -ous, -ive 등으로 끝나는 2음절어와
3음절 이상의 단어는 more, most를 사용하여 비교급, 최상급을 만듦.

(2) 원급의 용법 : as-as 사이에는 원급이 쓰인다.
ex) I am as strong as he. (동등비교)
I am not as[so] strong as he.
　 「as + ∼ + as」는 동등비교를 나타내며 이것의 부정형은
「not as[so] ∼ as」 이다
(3) 비교급의 용법- 비교급 다음엔 then을 쓴다.
ex) I am less strong than he. (열등비교)
= I am not as strong as he.
= He is stronger than I. (우등비교)
This book is more interesting than that one.
Which is larger, the sun or the moon?
It is getting warmer and warmer.
　 동일인 동일물의 비교
ex 1) He is cleverer than his brother.
He is more clever than wise.
He is cleverer than wise. ( )
동일인 동일물의 서로 다른 성질을 비교할 때는 형용사의
음절 수에 관계없이 more + 원급 + than의 형태로 표현함.
(4) the + 비교급, the + 비교급 = ∼ 하면 할수록 점점 더 … 하다.
ex) The higher we go up, the colder it becomes.
　 비교급의 강조
: much, even, far, still, a lot 등이 비교급 앞에 쓰여 「훨씬, 더욱」의
뜻을 나타낸다.
ex) A fresh and merry heart is far better than money.
(5) 최상급의 용법
최상급의 형용사 앞에는 the를 붙인다. 최상급 다음에는 of나 in이 오는
경우가 많은데, [-(중)에서]란 뜻이다. 지역이나 단체에는 in을 쓰고, 같은
종류의 비교는 of를 쓴다.
　 of + 복수보통명사, in + 단수보통명사의 형태를 취한다.
ex) She is the youngest girl in the class.
She is the youngest girl of them.
원급과 비교급으로 최상급의 뜻을 나타낼 때
ex 1) She is the prettiest girl in the class. (최상급)
= No other girl in the class is as pretty as she. (원급)
= No other girl in the class is prettier than she. (비교급)
= She is prettier than any other girl in the class. (비교급)
= She is the prettiest of all girls in the class. (최상급)
2) Time is the most precious of all. (최상급)
= Time is more precious than anything else. (비교급)
= Nothing is more precious than time. (비교급)
= Nothing is so precious as time. (원급)
