Abstract
This study considers a decentralized supply chain where its participants have rights to independently make their own decisions. Under these circumstances, supply chain optimization can be effectively achieved through coordination of decisions made independently by the participants. This study proposes a decision-making coordination mechanism which can find the transaction prices and the production or sales volume that will optimize the performance of a relatively simple supply chain consisting of a supplier, a manufacturer, a distributor, and final consumers. At the core of this coordination mechanism is the concept of a facilitator who, as a neutral third party, mediates information exchange and coordinates decision-making among the supply chain participants. As the mediator of information exchange, the facilitator obviates direct communication among the participants, thus eliminating the possibility of having to have their sensitive information exposed to the others. Through decision-making coordination according to pre-specified coordination rules, the facilitator can help the supply chain achieve the global optimality while allowing individual participants to peruse local optimization according to their own local objectives.
