있지만, Antonia는 미국인이, 열등문화라고 편훼하는 이민문화의 대변자 역할을 하며 자신의 정체성을 개척하고 있다. 이 소설의 3부에서 Antonia가 등장하지 않는 것, Antonia가 연인에게서 버림받고 사생아를 임신하는 것, Wick Cutter의 집에서 봉변을 당할 뻔한 것 등은 모두 기존 문화에 도전하고 갈등을 일으킨 벌이라고 해석할 수 있다.
