To primary purpose of an MIS is to help an organization achieve its goals by providing managers with insight into the regular into operations of the organization so that they can control, organize, and plan more effectively and efficiently. One important role of the MIS is to provide the right information to the right person in the right fashion at the right time. This picture shows the role of the MIS within the flow of an organization’s information. Note that business transactions can enter the organization through traditional methods or via the internet or an extranet connecting customer connecting customers and suppliers to the firm’s transaction processing systems. The use of MIS’s spans all levels of management. That is, they provide support to and are used by employees throughout the organization.
1. Input to MIS : data that enters an MIS originates from both internal and external sources, including the company’s supply chain. The most significant internal data sources for an MIS are the organization’s TPSs and ERP systems and related database. Business intelligence discussed can be used to turn a database into powerful information throughout the organization. External sources of data can include customers, supplies, competitor, and stockholders whose data is not already captured by the TPS, as well as other sources, such as the internet. In addition, many companies have implemented extranets to link with selected supplies and other business partners to exchange data and information.
