The main theme of The Great Gatsby is the poverty of spiritual life of American riches in 1920s. After World War I, materialism and hedonism prevail throughout the country, and the land of dream becomes the waste land, which is called by the name of ‘Valley of Ashes’(23) in the novel. The word ‘Valley of Ashes’ represents the historical time of American futility with other related images. We can discover the aspects of the waste land in The Great Gatsby by analyzing the symbols and images of the ‘Valley of Ashes’ and the characters. After the analysis, we can have the answer of the question ‘What makes Gatsby so great?’
