Teaching Grammar to EFL Students
This paper first defines grammar. Then, it looks at the reasons for teaching grammar and not teaching grammar. Taking a former position, it discusses recent approaches to teaching grammar along with advantages and disadvantages of each approach. Then, it addresses the applicability of these approaches to the teaching context in Korea. Finally, it briefly discusses implications for adopting or not adopting these approaches.
What is grammar?
Conventionally, grammar has been equated with form and the teaching of grammar with the teaching of explicit linguistic rules. Such definition is unduly limited although grammar is about form and one way to teach grammar is to give explicit explanation of rules. Larsen-Freeman (2001) challenges these conventional views and offers a three-dimensional definition of grammar:
