Glass Ceiling Remaining in Korea: the Realities and Solutions
In 1967, the United Nations declared the abolition of discrimination against women at the 22nd session of its General Assembly. To make it practical, CEDAW(Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women) was established in 1979 and it was signed by about 130 nations including the United States. The convention says women should be eligible to vote, paid equally for the same amount of work, and socioeconomically treated as equal to men.
These efforts has enhanced women’s status superficially but was not enough to change the perception toward women. This phenomenon is especially seen in Korea and reflected in modern Korean dramas. Following paragraph will show you how women were portrayed in classic movies and discriminated in pre-modern society. The next paragraphs deal with improved women’s status, the limit women are still facing in Korean society that is reflected in modern movies or dramas, and some solutions to the problem.
