These are the wages of vengeance, the price of becoming the instrument of the true justice administered from on high by the spirit of Revenge, in the name of the ghost of Don Andrea. In the end, all of the blood and madness in the play comes down to one point: the false value of class that Lorenzo and Balthazar embrace, and the false value of the state which Hieronimo embodies, must ultimately give way to the true value of cosmic justice, before which all are expendable. Hence Kyd can afford to show the implements of official sanction, the noose and the stake, because in the final analysis they are meaningless. Only in the dispensation of rewards and punishments in the afterlife have any real value, as only there are they deserved and everlasting.
KYD, Thomas (c. 1557-95), English dramatist, born in London, and educated at the Merchant Taylors' School, London. Kyd (Kid) was one of the most important dramatists of the early Elizabethan period, famed for his Spanish Tragedy (1594). His use of shocking melodramatic situations was imitated by many, including Shakespeare in Titus Andronicus. It is also believed that Shakespeare based his Hamlet on an earlier play (now lost) by Kyd. The Tragedy of Solyman and Perseda (c. 1588) and The First Part of Jeronimo (1605) are also attributed to Kyd.
Ⅲ. 결 론
Kyd의 비극은 네로 황제 시대의 철학자였던 Seneca에 크게 영향을 받았다고 할 수 있다. Seneca는 그리스 신화의 이야기에서 종교적 색채는 배제한 체 운명의 개념을 복수로 대치한 인물이다. 이러한 Seneca적 전통이 Thomas Kyd의 The Spanish Tragedy에서 여실히 보여지고있다. 아들인 Horatio의 죽음에 대한 Hieronimo의 복수과정을 담은 극으로 Seneca의 비극 형식의 토대 위에서 너무나 잘 짜여진 대중적 비극이 위대한 작가 Thomas Kyd에 의해서 만들어진 것이다.
Kyd는 이 극에서 공포조성을 위한 수단으로 복수와 유령을 등장시키며, Seneca드라마의 운율 등을 끌어들였다. 단순한 질투심으로 Alexander를 모함 그를 죽음으로 몰아넣는 Villuppo, Horatio에 대한 시기와 질투로 그를 죽이는 Balthazar와 Lorenzo등 뚜렷한 이유없이 사람을 죽이는 장면들에서 우리는 소름끼치는 인간성을 볼 수 있을 것이다.
Hieronimo역시 자신이 복수 할 수밖에 없는 정당한 이유가 있음을 밝혔으나 결국에는 그 복수가 그를 자기 파멸로, 그리고 죽음으로 이끌었으며, 그 자신의 정의실
현의 과정인 복수극에서 자신의 신념이나 모습을 잃어가고 있음을 느낄수 있었다. 1590년 경에 공연되어진 "The Spanish Tragedy"로 "Thomas Kyd"는 "Chirstopher Marlowe"와 함께 위대한 작가 Shakespeare에게 있어 지대한 영향을 끼친 작가로 기억되어지고 있다.
