Issues
As the largest retailer in the world, Wal-Mart is facing various issues ranging from the need of changing store format to the establishment of new global strategy. The company has grown significantly during its half century history by introducing and implementing several notable strategies such as varying store format, applying information technology, improving human resources efficiency, and going forward to internationalization. However, Wal-Mart now has only ten international units, but it wants to increase its competitive advantages internationally. With a nearly $300 billion sales, Wal-Mart feels keenly the need to have more efficient operating systems in all facets of its business and management fields. Furthermore, Wal-Mart faces strong competition from Target, Home Depot and Sears-Kmart constantly in its domestic market from which the company earned 81% of its total sales in 2004. Expanding its global reach and strengthening its domestic position are the company's essential issues which should be solved.
Recommendation
1) Overall management
In terms of sustainability, Wal-Mart should hire more permanent employees rather than temporary workers and increase benefits because the company's growth strategy could be effectively attained with more qualified employees. Also, commitment to the community (local and global) may be rewarded by impressed customers. Besides price, many customers are concerned about the environment. By urging suppliers to supply eco-friendly products and by advertising the fact that Wal-Mart provides eco-friendly products, the company could improve brand value and attract more customers. Initially, this strategy will cost more but in the long term Wal-Mart will be compensated.
