본문내용
It seems that the students’ ability of both speaking and writing their stories will improve greatly when genre-based approaches are introduced in the lesson plan. For genres such as narratives and recounts will help the students, who have not written a story in English, figure out how to develop their stories. Banks (2000) explains that genre approaches to teaching reading and writing have provided an effective teaching methodology. Furthermore, the genre-based approach to teaching conversation skills did help students develop their speaking skills.
In the situation where most of the students do not feel comfortable speaking English, if not all of them, and where there are more than thirty students, it will be better to give them an opportunity to write a story of their own guided by a genre-based approach before teaching them how to speak. This will provide every student with the knowledge of how to develop a story in a written form. Gerot (1994) says that the notions ‘genre’ and ‘grammar’ are closely linked. In the lesson the students will look at, they will also learn or brush up on the simple past tense, as they get into the genre of narrative. Furthermore, writing a story of their own will be a good experience in their learning.
