Engagement to American Studies
There was a reception for the new US Embassy Public Affairs Officer Gerald McLoughlin at Chosun hotel about a month ago. I was lucky enough to meet Park Geun, the former Korean ambassador to UN at the reception. He said, “You guys are the best because you study America, the most powerful country in the world.” His remark made my heart full.
I’m a senior and have been the president of the student body of American Studies major at Catholic University of Korea since March 2006. Also I recently formed a Study Group of America in my university. As of today, 30 out of 70 students who are majoring in American studies at Catholic University are participating in this activity. I am also a coordinator of American Studies Student Association in Korea. Sometimes people ask me “What will you do after graduating with the American Studies major?” I answer “American Studies is a bonanza. It relates everything.” On October 22, 2006, I participated in the 2nd family festival as a volunteer at the Children’s Grand Park in Seoul. I created some program which is related to American Studies, “Shooting the America” and “Halloween with family.” It was a big hit. That’s why I study and love American Studies.
