ABSTRACT
A Study on Kim Woo-Jin's Drama
-Focused on Author's Psychological Empathy into Drama Characters-
Yun, Keum-seon
The purpose of this study is to review Kim Woo-Jin's dramas in a psychoanalytical way, focusing on the correlation between author and his works in the lights of his psychological empathy into the characters.
First, in terms of maternity deficiency and adoption psychology, his characters are mostly deficient in maternity, missing it. At the same time, they feel bad for their mothers who passed away from them, which can be summed up as adoption psychology. Thus, their personality would be formed in a negative way, making their life course distorted. In short, because the author's mother passed away earlier, his missing of maternity and unstable life thereafter is well featured in his works.
Second, in terms of father complex and self-abhorrence, the author seem to be eager to resemble his father who was a positive rather than negative being. Thus, Kim Woo-Jin seems to be shameful of himself who is less able and more frail than his father. His characters are also incompetent and feeble. They are aware of their inability and even disgrace themselves, while feeling guilty for their inability to succeed their family heritage. Quite ironically, they tend to show some negative psychology, wishing to escape from their social responsibility and family loyalty.
Third, in terms of anxiety and suicidal psychology, Kim's poems, essays or diaries seems to see "death" as escape from the oppressing reality. He thinks that "death" implies loss of every deficiency and desire as well as freedom from oppression. His characters experience conflicts between ego and id (yearning for maternity), ego and super ego (father's oppression), and between personal ego (personality) and social one (ethics). Most of them also seem to be conscious shrewdly of suicide due to their oppressing anxiety.
As discussed above, literary works well reflect their author's psychology:sense of deficiency and unrealized desires in this case, Such a sense is directly or evasively reflected in the characters. Characters' behaviors also reflect author's ones in the real world. Otherwise, author's desires are at times realized by his characters in the fictional world. As it were, author's psychology is empathized into his characters.
