Traditionally, Korean society has accepted corporal punishment of children as an effective way for children desirable growth. Although corporal punishment is not synonymous with child maltreatment, there is no clear distinction between corporal punishment and physical abuse in Korean culture. Corporal punishment can make parents become abusive under certain circumstances. Furthermore, many researchers verify that the experiences of corporal punishment in childhood have negative effects later in life, even though there are ongoing debates about corporal punishment. When
considering parenting comes from their own cultural context, changes in the parents belief system and cultural value of corporal punishment are required. Providing educational programs and counseling for parents, as well as social interventions for child protection, will help to increase parents understanding of children and change their attitudes of corporal punishment.
