해타산과 편견, 안정주의에 젖은 성인들은 인생의 모험이나 부정부패의 악의 고리에 도전할 수 있는 용기와 정의감이 이미 소진되어 현실의 안녕에 탐닉되어 비겁하고 소심한 위선자가 되어버렸다. 그러나 이러한 시기에 발맞춰 출간된 <해리포터> 시리즈를 읽게 되면 그 동안 삶에 지쳐 까맣게 잊어버리고 있었던 동심을 찾게 되고 현실의 각박함과 생존경쟁에서 다소간 자유로워질 수 있는 것이다. 이 작품이 아이들을 위한 동화일 뿐 아니라 성인을 위한 환상 소설로서의 기능도 동시에 할 수 있는 것이다. 이것이야말로 <해리포터> 시리즈를 단숨에 세계적인 베스트셀러 작품 반열에 올려놓은 이유라고 필자는 보고 싶다.

Fantasy journey of Harry Potter

Since the first of the Harry Potter series came out in 1997, more than 10 consecutive volumes have been published. No one has argued about the length of the series because each of them is so interesting. Readers are so anxious about what will happen in the next story. Some even call the publisher to know the plot in advance. The series has brought world-wide fame and enormous affluence to a poor widow in her 30s. T have been many good works before the Harry Potter series such as Lord of Rings, Alice in the Wonderland, Cinderella, Dracula, Peter Pan and so forth. But none of them can be said to have caused a sensation in the whole world. There is no doubt that fairy tales are closely tied to fantasies. Though some tales are based on true stories, most of the famous tales are in the pursuit of illusions. This is because children have such flexible minds that they can break the boundary between imaginary world and reality. Since their ability to perceive reality is rudimentary, they are not good at analyzing it logically and critically. Thus, this stage is called childhood in child psychology. As they become grown-ups, the range of thought gets wide and solidified. When adults are capable of distinguishing reality from ideal. they do their best to adapt to reality while their pursuit for ideal are set aside. Consequently, they no longer have their dreams. In order for this not happen, people say that we have to go back to our childhood. However, because adults are already settled down to reality, they are not interested in their old time dreams any more. They are not courageous enough to venture their life and to challenge the evil. Rather they become small-hearted and interested only in their welfare. At this point of life, if you read Harry Potter, you can be free from demanding and competitive life and it will remind you of your juvenile mind. the series is not only fairy tales for children but also fantasies for adults. this is why the series has become a best-seller in a very short of time.
