A Study on the Changes in the Management System of Large Korean Manufacturing Firms
Abstract
This study attempts to analyze the changes in the management system of large Korean manufacturing firms during the past decade by empirically comparing their organizational characteristics with a ten year interval between 1987 and 1997. For this purpose, we empirically examined changes in human resource management, organizational goals, organizational structures, and executive characteristics for 177 companies in 1987 and 155 companies in 1997. The results showed that there were significant changes during the decade in labor mobility, promotion system, assessment criteria, and labor-management trust among HRM variables, centralization, task-oriented supervision, information system, value system, and conflict resolution methods among structural variables, and planning and organizing capabilities among executive characteristic variables. On the other hand, the other variables did not show significant changes during the ten year period.
