Since the mid 20th century, knowledge of medicine has developed in to a highly specialized and technological medical science. These advances of the modern medical science make our lives better; however, they also create many moral problems. One of them is abortion. Abortion has been a controversial issue after Roe v. Wade changed American law on abortion in 1973, permitting it at the request of the woman without restriction. (Callahan et al. 1996) The moral status of abortion involves the rights of human beings. Does a woman have a right to decide what happens in and to her body? Or, does a fetus have a right to life? There are two different ways of looking at these questions: Pro-choice, which says that it is a woman’s choice if she wants to have an abortion and Pro-life which advocates that abortion should not remain legal and that it is murder. Before proceeding to the main discussion, I want to say moral considerations are just a small part of the whole argument. This essay argues that a fetus’s right to life takes precedence over a woman’s right. The paper discusses, firstly, whether or not a fetus is a person, and has a right to life. Secondly, it discusses whether or not a woman’s decision should be able to outrank the right of fetus.
