가진 실린더 내에 다단의 lobes가 부착되어 있다. spool을 앞뒤로 움직여 입/출력 포트를 가진 spool lobe 사이의 공간을 적당히 배열하여 고압 유체를 시스템의 다른 경로로 유도한다. 왼쪽 그림에서는 포트 A가 가압되고 포트 B는 탱크로 배출된다.
