모들로 하여금 인식의 전환과 확장을 위한 좋은 이론적 틀을 제공하고 있다.
부모들의 인식의 전환과 확장은 부모들이 자신들이 가지고 있었던 관계의 틀을 객관적으로 바라볼 수 있는 여유를 가져다준다. 청소년들의 문제는 결국 이러한 관계의 틀 속에서 이해를 하고 부모들이 적극적으로 상담에 개입을 함으로서 해결할 수 있게된다. 세대간 가족치료는 부모를 상담에서 적극적으로 활용함으로서 청소년들의 문제를 해결하고자 한다.
부모들이 자신들의 관계의 틀을 이론적 입장에서 이해를 하고 분석을 통해서 실감을 했다면 상담자와 같은 입장에서 문제를 해결하고자 한다. 이런 점에서 부모들은 자신들이 상담자의 도움을 받아서 자신들의 가족의 관계 틀을 다시 짜는 핵심적 역할을 수행하게된다.
상담자는 이러한 입장에서 부모들에게 조언과 충고를 하고 방향을 잡아주는 코치의 역할을 하게된다. 세대간 가족치료는 부모를 상담에 적극적으로 활용하는 상담의 이론이다.
