영미영어의 어휘 차이가 두드러지게 나타나는 분야는 음식(food), 의류(clothing) 및 수송(transportation)등 세 분야라고 할 수 있다. 이것은 역사적으로 볼 때 새로운 음식과 이를 요리하는 새로운 방법이 개발되면서 두 나라간에 쓰이는 음식관련 어휘가 나누어졌기 때문이다. 유행의 변천은 의류관련 어휘의 엄청난 변화를 초래하였으며 미국과 영국이 분리되면서 발달하기 시작한 철도와 자동차산업은 수송수단을 나타내는 어휘의 차이를 가져왔다. 다음에 이들 세 분야에 관련된 영미영어의 어휘의 차이를 대조하여 일부만 열거하겠다. 괄호안은 미국영어에 쓰이는 어휘이다.
