[+ Animate] NP
18. Three major types of clauses
(Ordinary Clause/ Exceptional Clause/ Small Clause)
(1) Ordinary Clause
S'
C S ex) I believed [that Mary was innocent]
NP I VP
(2) Exceptional Clause
S ex) I believe [the president to be right]
NP VP I consider [my students to be bright]
(3) Small Clause
SC ex) I find [it conceivable that she's gone]
NP XP I believe [it inevitable that war will break out
19. constraint (제약) vs filter (여과)
Specified Subject Condition (명시주어조건)
Complex NP Constraint (복합명사구제한)
Subjacency (하위인접조건)
3) D-structure에서 시작하여 S-structure로 나타나는 도출과정에 대한 조건 (conditions on derivations) 또는 변형조건(conditions on transformations)이다.
(1) 'Internal Clause' Filter
1) Any surface structure containing one clause embedded internally within another is ungrammatical.
That the world is round is obvious?
For Mary to climb the fence would surprise Bill?
*Is that the world is round obvious?
*Would for Mary to climb the fence surprise Bill?
(2) 'Empty Subject' Filter
1) No clause can contain a non-empty COMP immediately followed by an empty NP.
*Who did he say [S' that was coming]?
Who did he say [S' that was coming]?
*Who did he wonder [S' whether/when saw Bill]?
(3) 'For-to' Filter
1) Any surface structure containing the sequence for-to is ungrammatical.
John would prefer for Bill to stay here.
*Who would John prefer for to stay here?
(4) 'Multiply Filled' Filter
1) No COMP can contain more than one overt constituent.
*the man [S' who that [S I saw]]
*[S'{COMP what where] has he left ]?
*[S'{COMP where what] has he left ]?
(5)'Root Clause' Filter
1) A root sentence containing a non-empty COMP immediately followed by an NP is ill-formed.
*That it is raining.
*Whether it is raining.
*What he has bought.
(6) 'For-for' Filter
1) Any surface structure containing the sequence for-for is ungrammatical.
*She is longing for for him to return.
(7) 'Stranded Preposition' Filter
1) Any COMP containing a PP which contains a P without an overt complement is ill-formed.
*Who does John think to Mary will talk?
20. Projection Principle (투사원리)
ex) a. [NP e] was killed John by Fred (D-structure)
b. Johni was killed ti by Fred (S-structure)
