c) can : may보다 가능성이 적기 때문에 단순하고 가벼운 의미로 사용된다.
(부정은 can not)
Ex.
The railways can be improved.
(i.e. 'The railways are improvable.' 'They are not improved.' )
cf. The railways may be improved.
(i.e. 'There are suggest that there are definite plans for improvement.')
(d) could, might : 가능성 거의 없음.
Ex.
If someone were to come to the wrong conclusion, the whole plan could/might be ruined. (~하면, ~하게 될 수도 있다.)
He could/might have been telling lies.
('It is just possible that he was/has been telling lies.')
I'm so hungry, I could eat two dinners!
(할 수도 있었지만 그렇게 하지 못했다는 뜻. could는 매우 약한 가능성.)
