적 이론으로 접근하고 있는가에 따라 개인차가 크다고 볼 수 있다. 이런 이론적인 근거에 따라 놀이치료 이론을 분류한다면 정신분석적 놀이치료(Psychoanalytic Play Therapy),분석적 놀이치료(Jungian), 아동중심놀이치료(Client-centered Play Therapy)가 주요이론이다. 물론 기법에 따라서는, 모래놀이치료(Sand Play Therapy), 게임놀이치료(Game Play Therapy),미술놀이치료(Art Play Therapy)등이 있다.
