가스터빈엔진은 일반적으로 압축기, 연소실, 터빈으로 이루어져 있는데, 연소가 연속적으로 이루어지며, 반대로 점화는 간헐적으로 첫 시동시를 빼고는 예외적인 경우를 제외하고 점화가 이루어지지 않는다. 그 예외적인 경우에는 악기류를 지날 때나, 상승 및 이륙, 음속 돌파시가 해당된다. 가스터빈엔진의 연소과정의 열역학적 특징은 정압과정으로 브레이튼사이클이 해당된다. 즉, 단열압축 – 정압가열 – 단열팽창 – 정압방열의 일련의 과정으로 설명할 수 있다. 그러나 실제에서는 마찰과 와류가 발생하므로 약간의 차이가 발생한다. 그리고 가스터빈엔진은 가격이 덜 비싼 대신에 연료소모량이 많고 축, 기어, 베어링등에만 윤활을 필요로 해 오일소모가 적다는 특징을 가지고 있습니다.
가스터빈엔진의 종류를 나누면 크게 두가지로 나눌 수 있는데, 제트추진엔진과 회전동력엔진이 있고, 제트추진엔진에는 터보제트엔진, 터보팬엔진이 있다. 그리고 회전동력엔진에는 터보프롭엔진과 터보샤프트엔진으로 나눌 수 있다.
