o substantiate the addiction-process.
The applied method of this study is content analysis of autobiography. Content analysis has been used among communication studies. In those studies, the unit of analysis may be a word, a sentence, a phrase or a pause. From nineteen thirties, autobiography content analysis method has been appalied to the studies of counseling psychology. Now it is considered as a valuable study method in spite of its defect such as low reliability and low validity.
Subjects of this study are consisted of twenty nine male and one female inpatients who were hospitalized with alcohol dependence diagnosis beween 1986 and 1989 in Seoul National Mental Hospital. They were asked to write and read their autobiographies at ATF(Alcoholic Treatment Facility) group. Then autobiographies were tape-recorded and analyzed through their developmental history focused on their drinking situation.
The main findings of this study are as follows.
1. Cultural and Psychological theories of alcoholism-customs, learning, conditioning, affect, cognition, interpersonal relationship, etc.- can be applied to Korean alcohol addicts. In other words many of Korean alcoholics were raised by parents who have drinking problems or have very over-protecting attitude. As a consequence, the alcohol addicts seem to have weak ego strength. The genetic factors on alcoholism are suspected also. In terms of their friends during adolescent ages, military service circumstances and occupations are found to play important roles on their alcohol addiction-process.
2. Six psycho-cultural mechanisms on alcohol addiction process are identified in their autobiographies. They are escape, pleasure-seeking, modeling, assimilation, Macho and opportunity. While escape and pleasure-seeking are grouped into intrapsychic mechanism, and modeling, assimilation, Macho, and opportunity are grouped into extrapsychic mechanism.
3. According to the sequence of six psycho-cultural mechanisms of the alcoholics' developmental history, Korean alcoholics are categorized into three types. They are escape-assimilation type(with modeling/ without modeling), Macho-assimilation type and escape-opportunity type.
The study results can help the alcoholics understand themselves and give implications to prevention and threatment of them. Furthermore, this study can initiate the other addiction studies; such as organic solvent addiction study among Korean adolescents and other various drug addicton studies.
