A Study on Tradition Discourses in History of Korean Modern Drama During 1970's

The concept about tradition has changed with the transition of the society. In this thesis, I examined tradition discourses brought in History of Korean modern drama during 1970's, focusing on the subjects, the objects, the contents, and the modernity in tradition discourses.
During 1970's, there were many discussions about tradition among the drama society. Government stressed the loyalty and filial piety, executing cultural politics to preserve cultural assets. Scholars including Cho Dong Il focused the popular psychology in folk drama studying the structure and theatricality of folk drama. Drama artists who had majored in western drama or had studied in the West argued conflicts between the western experimental drama and Korean folk drama. Her Kyu leading the company called 'Min Yae(arts theater toward national drama)' tried to explore the possibility of 'Korean national drama' as modern drama, using the methods and contents that was extracted in folk drama. The college students stressed succession to the popular psychology in folk drama while making 'Madang drama' that was played in Madnag(out place).
The objects of tradition discourses were diverse in 1970's. While the traditional mask plays were mainly discussed among tradition discourses during 1960's, Pansori, Gut, various rituals, and folk plays were also treated important during 1970's. These diverse traditional dramatic culture had risen to the surface because of their theatricality, as the concept of drama was extended.
In the point of the attitude about tradition, it was distinctive that the tendency to learn the folk drama and to succeed to folk drama was extended during 1970's, while the tendency to excavate and conserve was dominant over 1960's. The tendency among intellectual class gave the chance that folklore originated in traditional society was spreaded over modern society.
The tradition discourses were connected with the modernity in two aspects. First, the tradition discourses were a reflex of nationalistic viewpoint that was developed to overcome the west-oriented modernity among the third world. Second, These held several idea and method in common with the western experimental drama movement.
