The Relationship Between Economic Growth
and Sport Coverage

The final goal of economic growth is that grows the living condition. This economic growth made change of life style with increase of spare time, improvement of living condition and reduction of working hours. Therefore, people started to prefer sports for spare time activity.
So sport occupied big position of our culture and sport coverage which is developed with economic growth through the mass media have increased these days.
This research divided process of Korea economic growth as to a underdeveloped nation stage, a developing country stage, a semi-developed country stage based on ' The Cho, Dong-Sung's Model of Economic Growth Stage '.
The goal of this study is to estimate the change of volume in sport coverage which is showed on newspaper as to economic growth stage.
This research took Stemple's content analysis in order to find structural characteristic of sport coverage in Korea daily newspaper. We analyzed in total 374days' article printed in the Cho-Sun Ilbo and Dong-A Ilbo each published from 1948 to 1996 at 48 days intervals. The statistics employed in this study was ANOVA.
Based on the result of this research method and content analysis, we reached following conclusions.
1. There is relationship between economic growth stage and volume of Content of Competitions. Concretely, there is relationship between economic growth stage and volume of Male & Female content of competition as well as Each game.
2. There is relationship between economic growth stage and volume of All-around Informations. Concretely, there is relationship between economic growth stage and Record, Individual & Team Information, Equipment & Tool, Policy, Criticism, Congress & Seminar, Game & Event Information and Sport for All, Overseas sports, Photograph.
