거 없는 간음죄를 초월적 방식의 종교의식(ordeal)을 통해 취급함으로써, 생명과 관련된 간음죄를 신중하게(divinely) 취급할 것을 권장하고 있다.
밀그롬은 오직 간음과 관련된 규정(민 5:11-31)에만 주술적 재판의식의 사용된 점을 지적하면서, 고대 이스라엘 공동체는 증거가 없는 간음혐의자를 하나님의 판단에 의지하는 종교의식을 매우 중시했음을 지적한다(Milgrom, 1981: 74-75).
간음죄와 관련된 이 모든 규정들은 결국 인간의 존엄성과, 공동체의 건전한 존속을 위한 성(性)의 적극적 역할, 하나님과 거룩한 계약을 맺은 이스라엘 백성들의 거룩성 보존 차원에서 이해되고 유지되었다. 따라서 간음죄는 하나님을 거역한 죄에 해당된다(참조. Dempster, 189). 이것이 지켜지지 않았을 때 이스라엘은 패망했으며, 예언자들은 이스라엘의 패망을 하나님에 대한 성적 타락이라는 메타포(metaphor)를 통해 선포했다.
