사회는 점점 기업의 사회적 책임에 대해 기업의 사회 참여 활동을 주장한다. 그리고 피터 드러커는 '미래사회'에서 기업의 사회 활동은 기업의 정당성에 힘을 실어줄 수 있다고 말하기도 하였다.
그러나 이러한 사회 참여 과정에서 소극적 의미의 사회 활동을 넘어서 적극적 사회 활동을 벌이는 것은 기업이 사회 활동에 대해서 비전문적이라는 데에서 생기는 비효율적인 측면, 기업의 힘이 지나치게 커지는 데서 오는 부작용, 사회 산업에 참여하기 위해 자기 제품 경쟁력이 떨어질 수 있는 부작용를 낳게 된다.
따라서 기업은 사회의 기업의 책임에 대한 욕구를 만족시키고, 기업 본연의 목적이란 두 가지를 다 만족시킬 수 있는 소극적인 사회 참여(윤리 경영) 활동을 하여야 한다. 사회적으로 건전한 제품과 서비스 개발에 전력투구함으로써, 기업은 경쟁력 강화를 얻을 수 있고, 주주는 기업의 경쟁력 강화로 인한 이익을 보다 많이 분배받을 수 있으며, 소비자는 좀 더 낮은 가격에 높은 제품과 서비스를 제공받을 수 있게 될 것이다. 또 종업원들은 기업이 안정적이고 높은 이윤을 얻음으로써 안정적인 고용과 좀 더 나은 사원복지를 기대 할 수 있게 될 것이다. 국가와 지역사회, 비영리 단체들이 많은 이익을 낸 기업이 주는 돈을 통해 좀 더 전문적이고 효율적인 사회 사업을 펼침으로써 사람들은 좀 더 많은 이익을 돌려 받을 수 있게 될 것이다.
