서, MED : minimal erythemal dose(홍반을 일으킬 수 있는 최소량)이다.
적절한 일광차단제의 사용이 일광화상 및 피부암의 예방에 효과가 있다고 알려져 있으나 일부에서는 일광차단제가 피부암 예방에 효과가 없거나 더 나아가 피부암을 초래할지도 모른다는 결과도 제시되고 있다. UVA, UVB를 모두 다 흡수하는 SPF 15이상의 일광차단제를 사용하는 것이 여전히 자외선 노출에 대한 효과적인 방어수단이 된다.
