Overview
High levels stress will degrade human information processing. (either existing before the disaster or caused by the first few seconds of crisis.) This degradation may compound the effects of any initial error or failure that led to the crisis in the first place. Indeed, it often seems that stress and errors are tightly linked in a closed-loop combination. When errors are made, they cause stress. And when high levels of stress exist, errors are more likely to occur.
Stress(스트레스)
The concept of stress is most easily understood in the context of Figure 12.1(p.481).
On the left of the figure is a set of stressors, typically degrading, influences on information processing and cognition that are not inherent in the content of that information itself, nor in the skills of the human. Stressors may include such influences as noise, vibration, heat, dim lighting, and high acceleration, as well as such psychological factors as anxiety, fatigue, frustration, and anger.
Such forces typically have three manifestations.
(1) They produce a phenomenological experience and often an emotional or "affective" one.
(2) Closely linked, a change in physiology is often observable. The phenomenological and physiological characteristics are often linked.
(3) Stressors affect characteristics of information processing, although this effect need not always degrade performance.
