Abstract
A Study on Yogic Discipline
- A Comparative Study on the Disciplines of Classic Yoga and Hatha Yoga -
Classic Yoga (Patanjali's Yoga) is a type of Yoga centering around mental discipline, while Hatha Yoga is another type of Yoga centering around physical discipline.
In this thesis I make a comparative study on the mental and the physical disciplines of Yoga, and elucidate the organic relations of both. The purposes of this thesis are as follows. First, to clarify the differences and the similarities between the disciplines of Classic and Hatha Yoga. Second, to elucidate general organic relations between the mental and the physical disciplines of Yoga. Third, through above study, to elucidate the fundamental principles of yogic discipline.
I, then, elucidate that the organic relations between the two aspects of yogic discipline are to materialize the views on human in Yoga. That is, in Yoga it is believed in the eternal Self (Atman) transcending the empirical self (ego). The ideal of yogi is to stop all functions of body and mind by controlling them, to transcend the empirical self (ego) consisted of body and mind, and to unite himself with eternal Self (Atman, God). The purpose of Yogic discipline is, therefore, not to control body and mind themselves at all. The ideal of Yoga is to conquer body and mind perfectly, to conquest human sufferings, and eventually to attain the absolute freedom.
Key Words : Classic Yoga/Hatha Yoga, mind/body, mental discipline/physical discipline, eternal Self(Atman)/empirical self(ego)
