Type 1 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes
- blood glucose levels rise due to
1) Lack of insulin production
2) Insufficient insulin action (resistant cells)
- commonly detected after 40
- effects > 90%

- eventually leads to β-cell failure
(resulting in insulin dependence)

Gestational Diabetes
3-5% of pregnant women in the US develop gestational diabetes

Diagnosis of DM


Diabetes: A1c level is 6.5% (47 mmol/mol) or higher

Pre-diabetes (increased risk of developing diabetes in the future): A1c is 5.7% - 6.4% (39 - 46 mmol/mol)*

FPG >126 mg/dl (7.0 mmol/l);

· Plasma glucose 200 mg/dl (11.1 mmol/l) during an OGTT
