e lapse of time. Through his works, he showed his strong will to clearly paint the various features of the Korean society. This study of mine aims to look into his plays written in 1960s. We can grasp the identity what the Korean realism drama intended to show through the study of his works as his works are generally said to represent the Korean realism dramas.
I studied his plays with two structure approach. One is to try to find out at his works the metaphorical characteristics of family that forms a basis of changing features of the society. Cha, Bum-Suk intended to metaphorically show the objective world through the concept of family. However, it resulted in the continuation of conservative narration through the settlement of the conflicts between the leading social morality in 1960s and old morality. The second issue was ideality of the other. He showed specific interest in sexual desire, homosexuality, race discourse, etc., that had been away from the interest of other writers. Such an interest of Cha, Bum-Suk in the other appeared as a part of his fatal world view. While we raise diversified issues facing the confirmation of the others existence, we, in most cases, were upset by our incapability to solve them. Our frustrations were coming from not immature subjective and objective condition for confirming the appropriateness of truth, but the ideality based on the fatal meditation. It bore conservatism, that is, ideological effect to have the current order and structure remaining. Fatal meditation was a different expression of the negation against progress, and it wasn't concerned with objective and real value.
While Cha, Bum-Suk tried to explain the flow of history(generation recourse), he was never dependent upon its changing characteris- tics(recourse on the other). Such an attitude of his resulted in the negation against the dynamism and the power of execution that the belief in the integration of human being requires. Generally, humanism is called a reaction to the threat to human beings, and Cha, Bum-Suk was reluctant to show instability and wrath in his works. As a result, such negation of his resulted in the political meaning acknowledging a dominant ideology to maintain current situation.
As a result, while Cha, Bum-Suk's realism dramas tried to mirror the conflicts of the period from his specific viewpoint, his attitude of fatal meditation integrated all those conflicts. It was a kind of change in the pattern of realism drama coupled with the contraction of meaning of the realism drama at the time. The realism drama at previous stage represented popular literature with enlightening touch, and now it came to play a role of the mirror of the society. However, he failed to approach the target to play a role of the mirror of the society in his works due to his attitude of fatal meditation and his plays only produced conservative recourse. In the regard, Cha, Bum-Suk's plays in 1960s generally wore gloomy symptom of realism dramas.
