‘Korean Grammar for foreign learners’ this year. The two books are ‘Korean Grammar for foreign learners 1 - system’, and ‘Korean Grammar for foreign learners 2 - usage’, respectively. Compilation of the books began in 2000 for the purpose of providing the standard Korean grammar to the learners and teachers of Korean as a foreign language. The two books are complementary in that ‘Korean Grammar 1’ without ‘Korean Grammar 2’ is not useful because the meaning and usage of each grammatical expressions can not be grasped and the other way is the same. The writers thought that emphasis should be put on improving communicative ability in the education of Korean gra! mmar for foreign learners. Considering the characteristics of foreign learners who have no intuition and knowledge of Korean language, they described the Korean grammar in many points differently from Korean school grammar for the Koreans. And explanations on the grammatical issues were given in constrast with the other languages such as english, japanese, chinese and french, etc. In the ‘Koean Grammar for foreign learners’, terminology is avoided if possible and the explanations on the error which foreign learners tend to make in speaking Korean are given. In due course, the two books will be translated into English and other languages for the contribution of the Korean language education worldwide.
