위의 방법의 경우, DNA vaccine 으로 개발되어 임상실험을 하고 있다고 하며, 실험에서는 Type 1 Diabetes(제 1형 당뇨병. 자가 면역) 에 효과가 있었다고 한다. 이것이 성공적인 결과를 나타낼 경우, 여태까지 큰 부작용을 동반하던 치료법에 획기적인 변화를 줄 것이라고 생각된다.
또한 재미있는 연구 결과도 있는데, 자가 면역반응의 하나인 알레르기의 경우, 기생충에 감염되었을 경우는 알레르기 반응이 줄어든다는 것인데 즉 기생충의 감염률과 알레르기 반응의 경우 반비례 한다는 것이다. 사자 회충이 몸밖으로 배출하는 단백질로 실험한 결과, 알레르기성 천식을 억제하였다는 결과가 있다. 요충을 가지고 실험한 경우, 실험쥐에서 인슐린 의존형 당뇨병의 발생을 감소시켰다고 한다. 일반적인 화학약품으로 하는 것이 아닌 친환경적(?)인 약품이 가능할지도 모르겠다.
하지만 이것은 어디까지나 억제제이며, 치료제는 아니다. 치료제를 개발하기 위한, 자가 면역반응의 정확한 원인은 아직 모르고 있으며, 아직 성별에 따른 발생률 원인조차 명확하지 않을 정도이다. 위에 나열한 경우들 역시 결국은 억제법이며, 사실상 해당 방법으로 부작용이 덜한 억제가 가능하다 해도, 지속적인 투여를 해야 한다는 것에는 변함이 없기 때문에, 이러한 억제법이 아닌 원천적인 것의 해결이 나와야 환자들이 무덤까지 병을 가지고 가는 일이 줄어들 것이라 생각한다.
